Long Distance Campaigner

   1417 days 1 hour ago (18:12)

By Tom Segel (10/04/04)

One needs not be an investigative reporter to discover there are hundreds and hundreds of public office seekers offering either positive or negative comments about the war in Iraq. Few know anything about the subject they are addressing, other than the information they have gleaned from network news or their local newspaper and television. There is one campaigner, however, who can provide you with more than the latest political talking points. He is running for elective office, but not in the usual manner.

It is more than 7,600 miles from Kingsville, Texas to Iraq, but while campaigning for a seat in the Texas State Legislature, John Hubert finds he is also smack-dab in the middle of the war zone. His wife, Amy, does most of the legwork, carrying the candidate’s message from town to town around a legislative district.

VoIP Brings Much More Than Toll-Free Long-Distance to Asia-Pacific Markets, Says Yankee Group

Bundling VoIP Connections With Cable or DSL Broadband Is A Winning Service Combination in Many Asia-Pacific Markets

Although carriers first introduced VoIP as a cost-effective alternative to conventional long-distance services, the toll bypass opportunity of VoIP has become less pronounced in the Asia-Pacific region, according to the Yankee Group report, SIP-Based VoIP Gains Converts in Asia-Pacific. As telcos continue to refine their VoIP game plans, the rise of broadband internet in Asia-Pacific provides ever-increasing demand.

The early success of BB phone from Yahoo! BB in Japan launched a new chapter for VoIP. Many service providers are replicating the Yahoo! BB model, which bundles a VoIP connection with cable or DSL broadband service. Investing in voice technology over broadband will become commonplace. SingTel is one of the pacesetters, and its strategic agreement with SIPphone to deliver SIP-based VoIP services is intriguing. More importantly, in addition to creating new revenue streams, SingTel’s strategy envisions the integration of voice and data communications.

Phone Pals in hot start

By DOMINIC MENOR
TODAY Reporter

Talk ’n Text opened defense of its title on a positive note by defeating San Miguel, 93–89, on opening day last night of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Gran Matador One Philippines Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Starting power forward Mark Telan scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, most of those conversions uncharacteristically around the perimeter.

But it was his driving lay-up off Willie Miller’s hand-off pass with 1:11 left in the game that pushed the Pals ahead by a comfortable 89–85 margin and helped Talk ’n Text to seal the first victory in the league’s 30th season.

Officials laud Texas Eagle’s improved on-time rating

   1417 days 2 hours ago (17:07)

By JO LEE FERGUSON
MARSHALL — Amtrak’s Texas Eagle train has improved its on-time performance more than any of the other long-distance trains Amtrak operates.

Amtrak officials were in Marshall on Saturday to meet with members of the Texas Eagle Marketing and Performance Organization, a group of volunteers who champion the Texas Eagle along its route between Chicago and San Antonio. The train connects to the Sunset Limited train in San Antonio to provide service to Los Angeles.

About 30 people attended the meeting.

«The most improved of all the long-distance trains is the Texas Eagle,» said Marc Magliari, Amtrak’s media relations manager.

Customers find a cheaper way to make their connections

By Matt Branaugh

SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE
BOULDER, Colo. -- In some ways, Alyson Canepa just might be a pioneering example of how people communicate with each other in this decade -- maybe even in the 21st century and beyond.

The Realtor from Longmont, Colo., already has used high-speed Internet access at home since 2002 to help her download pictures of houses for clients. This summer, she switched from traditional phone service to something that allows her to make and receive calls over her Internet connection for a much cheaper price.

The main benefit: all of the perks she enjoyed before. That includes voice-mail and caller identification and no long-distance tolls when she calls her daughter, who is living in Japan, or her rental properties in Northern Colorado.
