PIERRE, S.D. — Workers in state government contributed more than $33,000 in a «dress down» day to benefit South Dakota National Guard members called to active duty.

State workers donated a $1 or more to the fund and then could dress casual on the day before Thanksgiving.

Mark Johnston, the press aide to Gov. Mike Rounds, said the response was overwhelming.

The money will be used to buy phones, phone cards and other items so the troops can communicate with their families.
