New Delhi: India’s public sector Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the largest telephone services provider, Tuesday announced a reduction of as much as 25 percent in domestic long distance phone tariffs.
According to the new rates, to come into effect from December 15, phone calls beyond 100 km will be charged at Rs.1.80 a minute, down from Rs.2.40 a minute now, said Pirthipal Singh, chairman and managing director of BSNL.
«We expect the traffic to increase with the latest reduction that will be available to all fixed-line customers, including public call offices,» Singh told a news conference here.

MOSCOW, Dec 9 (Prime-Tass) -- Russia’s Antimonopoly Ministry has allowed Russian fixed-line operators to provide a 50% discount on domestic long-distance phone and telegraph services in the holiday season from December 25 to January 7, the ministry’s press service reported Tuesday.
The ministry also authorized the national long-distance phone service provider Rostelecom to set a seasonal 50% discount for operators that provide long-distance services.

Navarro County commissioners will likely approve a contract with a company that will audit the county jail’s revenue stream from its public phones.
The company, Praeses Corporation, will make sure the call volume on the county’s pay phones are being properly counted for revenue and that the county is receiving the actual commissions it should be.
Richard Wright, Praeses’ representative at Monday’s meeting of the Navarro County Commissioners Court, said his 17-year-old company began making its money reselling long distance services before transitioning in recent years to offering public phone management services to different entities.
