Competitive Local Exchange Carriers Deploy Tekelecs Distributed Class 4/5 Switching Solutions for Rapid Expansion
Tekelec (NASDAQ: TKLC), a leading developer of telecommunications products for next-generation fixed, mobile and packet networks to operators worldwide, today announced that Budget Phone Inc. and Pine Tree Networks have deployed the Tekelec 3000 (formerly SanteraOne) Multimedia Gateway Controller (MGC) and Tekelec 8000 Multimedia Gateway (MG) to enable expansion of prepaid calling and long-distance services.
Budget Phone, a Shreveport, La.-based competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC), deployed Tekelecs multimedia gateway and controller in May 2004 when its prepaid calling card subscriber base outgrew the capacity of its existing platform. Now, the Tekelec solution manages all of Budgets inbound and outbound call traffic and provides real-time updates to the operators prepaid call application server for an almost unlimited number of subscribers. Tekelecs switching solutions also have enabled Budget Phone to begin offering long-distance service to its subscribers and will serve as the foundation for future applications.

Abandoning landlines doesnt make sense for many yet
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- In a few short decades, todays children will tell their disbelieving kids that long, narrow cords once anchored telephones to outlets in the wall.
Traditional landline phones are facing a tandem attack from Internet calling services, or VoIP, and wireless phones -- both of which offer some distinct advantages to the standard handset-and-cradle. And a small but increasing number of Americans is making the leap to the cell-phone-only life. But there are plenty of reasons to stay anchored to the landline, at least for now, particularly for families with kids.
Among the concerns cited by consumers not yet ready to cut the cord: They need their phone line for Internet access, and they dont feel comfortable relying solely on a cell given mobile-phones unreliable call quality, according to a Forrester Research report earlier this year.

In a letter to Business Standard, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India chief Pradip Baijal has said the reason why Trai is not investigating Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limiteds allegations against Reliance Infocomm is that it has a staff of just 120 persons, as compared to the United States regulators 3,500 and Brazils 1,500, and so doesnt have an investigative arm.
In the event, he said Trai had asked the government to investigate the allegation that Reliance was passing off international calls as local ones in order to avoid paying BSNL the access deficit charge -- under the law, for all incoming international calls, operators have to pay BSNL Rs 4.25 a minute, and since this is around 8090 per cent of any companys revenue from incoming calls, few are keen to pay this if they can avoid it.
Whats ironic is the day Baijals letter was published, The Financial Express had a story quoting a senior official as saying the government was not likely to interfere because «it is a fight between operators and they alone should resolve the matter.»
