Extended Wait For Long Distance Carriers

   1449 days 23 hours ago (02:33)

by Marva Cossy
Barbadians may have to wait until next year for choice of carriers while making their long distance telephone calls.

Government had promised to liberalise that market earlier this year but that deadline was pushed to August 1.

Wednesday, Minister of Telecommunications Anthony Wood hinted at a further delay. Wood said a date for liberalising the long distance service would not be given until the conclusion of a request now before the Fair Trading Commission (FTC) which relates to new domestic telephone rates.

In the meantime, the entrant to the mobile telephone markets said they were faced with high expenses and unable to make potential savings which could be passed on to customers who make long distance calls.

Hidden charges add up to big hotel bills

   1449 days 23 hours ago (02:18)

I felt like the luckiest guy in Las Vegas a couple weeks ago when I checked into the Tropicana Resort hotel. I’d gotten a cheap rate at a time when most other Strip hotels were charging two or three times as much.

But I soon found a potential trap that could have made my stay a lot more expensive. The front-desk clerk warned me long-distance telephone charges were $14.40 for the first minute, $1 a minute thereafter.

Wow. I had my cell phone, but what if reception was lousy? What if I’d forgotten my power cord? Three brief long-distance calls and my phone bill would have exceeded the cost of the room.
