AT&T says over a million wrongfully charged

   1581 days 5 hours ago (18:54)

PORTLAND, ORE. — You could be among the more than a million people charged for phone service you never asked for.
Paul Keyser says AT&T continues to bill him every month for long distance, yet his home line is not set up for long distance calls.

After months of frustration he asked KATU’s Ed Teachout to investigate.

In a statement to KATU, AT&T apologizes for any inconvenience its billing error caused people.

«We apologize for the error and for the inconvenience it’s caused.» — from AT&T statement.

The company said it would reimburse customers for six months worth of billing errors.

However, AT&T admitted that of the million plus people that were wrongfully charged, 800,000 are not customers of AT&T.

Keyser said people need to check their last six months of phone bills carefully to make sure they have not been wrongfully charged by AT&T.

«I’m going to make sure I’m reimbursed, but my concern there are a lot of people that don’t even know they’re being billed,» said Paul Keyser.

The Oregon Public Utilities Commission said AT&T used an old customer list to send out the bills every month since January.

Since Ed checked out this story, the Oregon Attorney General is investigating to see if AT&T intentionally used the list to charge people for services they didn’t ask for.
