Internet phones may create problems for 911 responders

Before you sign up for an inexpensive new Internet phone service and chuck your regular phone, you should know that emergency help might be delayed if you call 911.

Few people in the Northland are ditching their home phones yet, but the lure of dirt-cheap or free long-distance calling could turn a technologically challenging issue into a life-and-death situation.

Here’s the problem: Emergency calls made using new Internet telephone services ring in through a nonemergency line to the St. Louis County 911 center.

Phone polls disconnect with reality

Not only is the Electoral College system of electing our president starting to show its age, so is the method of gauging public opinion — the telephone poll.
Poll results and their predictions are big in the news right now because pollsters are busily calling up Americans to chat about whom they might vote for on Nov. 2, and finding it a tight race. But pollsters and other observers are starting to worry about the growing number of people who are left out of the polling process, and what that means for future accuracy of public opinion data.

It’s not people too poor for a phone or the homeless who are cause for concern (though they are historically left out of both polls and elections, so it’s probably a wash), but legions of mostly young voters who live a cellular-phone-only lifestyle.

MTNL threatens to snap Reliance Infocomm calls

MUMBAI, OCT 22: State-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) is considering disconnecting all Reliance Infocomm calls being routed through its network for non-payment of ADC (access deficit charges) dues on international calls.

According to MTNL officials, Reliance Infocomm has not yet paid up dues amounting to Rs 138 crore on account of revenue lost from international calls which it routed as local calls in Mumbai. The revenue lost in Delhi is also in the same region, they said.

Encryption For Long-Distance SANs

NeoScale introduces an appliance that protects data as it traverses a storage area network.

Companies working to secure their IT infrastructure now have a tool to protect storage area networks and improve back-end security. NeoScale Systems Inc. will unveil its CryptoStor SAN VPN appliance on Tuesday as an option for securing back-end communications related to storage networks.

The tool is designed to encrypt data as it moves across a long-distance storage network from one site to another. NeoScale says the appliance will also improve performance of high-end networks such as synchronous optical networks.
