WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) — Telecommunications stocks ended Friday’s trading session on a negative note, with losses piling up shortly before the markets closed.

Most wireless and long-distance phone stocks fell, as did equipment companies, though local phone companies showed strength.

The broadly based Nasdaq Telecommunications Index slid 3.3 percent -- with losses doubling in the last hour -- as 19 of the 20 largest stocks declined.

Similarly, 14 of the 15 equities in the American Stock Exchange’s Networking Index lost ground. Foundry Networks (FDRY) sank 11 percent to $10.29 after posting weak quarterly results.

In the phone sector, seven of the 12 largest publicly traded stocks fell. MCI (MCIP) dropped 13 percent and Nextel Communications (NXTL) gave up 5 percent in value.

Yet Verizon (VZ), SBC Communications (SBC) and BellSouth (BLS) all rose about 2 percent, one day after AT&T said it will stop marketing local and long-distance service to new customers.

AT&T (T) shed 22 cents at$14.02.
