Telemar, Gerdau, Eletrobras, Embratel: Brazilian Equity Movers

Brazil’s main stock index fell for a second day, led by Tele Norte Leste Participacoes SA, or Telemar, the country’s largest phone company.

The Bovespa index of the most-traded stocks on the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange fell 242.42, or 1.1 percent, to 22,044.07 at 10 a.m. New York time. The index has fallen 2.8 percent in the week, its third weekly drop in a row.

Following are the stocks that are most active in Brazilian markets today. In Brazil, the preferred share is usually the company’s most-traded class of stock.

Telemar (TNLP4 BS), the stock with the heaviest weighting of the index, fell for a second day, dropping 46 centavos, or 1.2 percent, to 37.4 reais. The stock has fallen 18 percent this year, under-performing the Bovespa, which fell 0.9 percent drop.

Centrais Eletricas Brasileiras (ELET6 BS), the country’s largest power generator, fell for a fifth day, declining 70 centavos, or 1.9 percent, to 36.30 reais, a 5.3 percent decline in the week.

Embratel Participacoes SA (EBTP4 BS), the country’s largest long distance phone company, fell 9 centavos, or 1.3 percent, to 6.69 reais, making a 7.7 percent drop in the week, the worst performer this week among Bovespa’s members.

Gerdau SA (GGBR4 BS), the largest maker of structural steel in the Americas, rose 25 centavos, or 0.6 percent, to 46.10 reais. Gerdau said yesterday it agreed to pay $266 million for eight U.S. steel-making and processing units from Cargill Inc.
