   1506 days 18 hours ago (14.10.2004 20:49)

BROOMFIELD, Colo. and GREENVILLE, S.C., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ Level 3 Communications, Inc. and CHAMPION Communications today announced that Level 3’s wholesale Voice-over-IP (VoIP) services are providing support for the recently announced CHAMPION GOLD residential phone service offerings being sold to consumers nationwide through independent marketing representatives.

CHAMPION, a global telecommunications company with headquarters in Greenville, S.C., purchased Level 3’s (3)VoIP Enhanced Local service, as well as (3)VoIP(SM) Local Inbound and (3)Voice(R) Termination services to support its CHAMPION GOLD phone service offerings.

«Level 3’s VoIP services enable CHAMPION to offer hosted VoIP solutions from which consumers can choose virtually ’plug-and-play’ phone services,» said John Walter, president and CEO of CHAMPION. «Level 3 is today’s only carrier with the VoIP technology leadership and nationwide capabilities to allow us to rapidly, aggressively, and cost effectively enter today’s quickly evolving VoIP market.»

With (3)VoIP Enhanced Local service, CHAMPION can provide where available full-featured, cost-effective, high-quality local and long distance telephone service -- including 911 and E911 -- to consumers. Users with high-speed Internet connections, such as cable and DSL, can make and receive phone calls using existing analog touchtone telephones or digital IP telephones -- eliminating the need to purchase traditional telephone service.

«We’re excited that customers such as CHAMPION are building innovative offerings like CHAMPION GOLD on top of Level 3’s (3)VoIP Enhanced Local business and residential platform,» said Donna Lachance, senior vice president of Softswitch Services for Level 3. «The CHAMPION GOLD service demonstrates the value that (3)VoIP Enhanced Local offers our customers, namely the ability to increase revenues by helping accelerate and expand their launch of high- quality VoIP offerings tailored to their customers’ needs, thus differentiating themselves from competitors while also avoiding costly build-outs.»

Level 3 VoIP Services

Level 3’s (3)VoIP Enhanced Local service is a wholesale VoIP solution that enables companies who operate their own switching infrastructures to launch IP-based local and long-distance communications services to residential and business customers via any broadband connection. Level 3’s proprietary Softswitch platform makes the service extremely efficient, enabling enhanced service providers such as CHAMPION to cost effectively speed their deployment of high-quality VoIP services.

(3)VoIP Enhanced Local provides the essential components required to offer high-quality VoIP service. These components include network trunking, local numbers, local number portability, E911, operator assistance, directory listings, and directory assistance. At the same time, the (3)VoIP Enhanced Local solution allows Level 3 customers such as CHAMPION to retain the flexibility to manage and control end-user features without the headaches of implementing complex interconnection arrangements.

In markets where it is available, the E911 feature is Level 3’s enhanced 911 service, which adds further value to its VoIP services such as (3)VoIP Enhanced Local. E911 automatically associates a caller’s number with the caller’s location, and automatically connects the call to the closest Public Service Access Point.

Level 3’s (3)VoIP Local Inbound service supports toll-free VoIP telephony applications with the ability to dial locally and terminate nationally over traditional circuit-switched equipment. Level 3’s (3)Voice Termination service provides termination of VoIP calls into the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories over Level 3’s IP-based Softswitch network, enabling service providers to leverage traditional circuit-switched equipment.

Level 3 is an industry pioneer in the development of VoIP technology and services. The Level 3 global network, which is optimized end-to-end for IP technology, was built from the ground up with convergence in mind -- that is, to carry voice and data, as well as video services. Today, Level 3 offers a broad suite of wholesale business and residential IP-based voice solutions over a robust Softswitch-based network platform that carries over 30 billion minutes of IP-based voice and data calls every month.

Other Level 3 VoIP services include the (3)Tone(SM) Business Service suite, (3)VoIP Toll Free(SM), and HomeTone(SM).
